Embracing the Instagram Algorithm
As Social Media Managers we are constantly striving to increase our engagement and awareness on our various platforms. Luckily, a few people have dedicated countless hours to crack the Instagram algorithm.
Understanding just how this algorithm works can have an incredible advantage on your Instagram pursuits. If you know how Instagram is analyzing your image and deciding what to do with it, you can capitalize on that information and design your social media marketing strategies around the algorithm instead of just hoping.
Before continuing it is key the mention that Instagram wants to embrace high-quality genuine content. So, chances are that more effort you put into embracing genuine engagement with your audience, the lower the chance of it being suppressed by the algorithm. This is true across all social media platforms.
With that being said, It is common sense that Instagram will prioritize content that gets the most engagement.
But what does that mean?
Humans have a tendency to put more worth into different interactions on social media and Instagram is no different. In the eyes of Instagram, the most important engagements for feed ranking are comments, likes, and reshares. Again, the more engagement the post gets, the more visible it will be for other users outside of your network.
Before getting into the details, here a few more key points to keep in mind during any social media pursuits.
1. If a certain user has interacted with a lot of your past content, they’ll be more likely to see your future content. This makes continual, repeat engagement on your posts important for building a loyal audience. So, take the time to engage with your followers and potential followers!
2. While Instagram's simple chronological feed is a thing of the past, timeliness is still somewhat relevant. More recent posts will be favored and pushed to the top of the feed, while older posts will show up a little further down. What does this mean? The more you post, the higher chances you will have of someone seeing your content. However, be sure and take the time to craft high-quality content!
Pro Tip: Share your follower's stories on your own stories. It is amazing how excited followers can become knowing their content is shared on a business or public figure's profile.
We can't deny that stories have been a driving force behind successful social media in recent years. So, here is an incredible article about how Instagram ranks stories! https://later.com/blog/instagram-stories-views/
In short, The Instagram algorithm tries to predict what posts are the most important to you and uses three main factors to determine this: interest, timeliness, and relationship.
It all boils down to who you appear to be closest to based on your interactions with other profiles, posts, and stories.
